The ProForm FX 5 Elliptical Trainer –
Fair Value for Lightweight User
A beginner machine such
as the ProForm FX 5 elliptical trainer is a good choice for a new user
who is just getting started on a low-impact cardio program. The ProForm brand
(from Icon Fitness) is not highly regarded for its trainers but a few models do
have some interesting advantages over competitors. The ProForm FX 5 works great
for many light users, but if you intend to do intensive five-day-a-week
workouts, you’d be advised to get a better quality trainer.
What the Professionals Say
ProForm elliptical reviews point out that while this model accommodates user
weights
up to 275 pounds, owners remarked that it’s built with cheap components. Another
problem with the FX 5 is the flywheel is located on the front, which combined
with a limited 16” stride length, gives an average height or taller user a very
choppy stride experience; more of an up and down motion than gliding in a true
oval (elliptical) pattern. That kind of jerky ride is typical of a lot of front
flywheel models although ProForm also makes a number of rear-flywheel models.
Specifications
The ProForm FX 5 elliptical trainer has these features: 5 weight loss and 3
personal trainer workouts, 10 resistance levels, EKG™ Heart Rate Monitor and
target pacer, cooling fan, water bottle holder, and 7-year frame warranty. The
display is easy to read and shows time, speed, distance, resistance, pulse and
calories burned.

More Drawbacks
Quite a few ProForm elliptical reviews acknowledge that you’ll eventually come
to be annoyed by the plastic parts and some of the other cheap components. In
other words, don’t expect a quality machine for $499. The parts warranty on the
FX 5 elliptical trainer is only for a year so that should give you an idea as to
how long the company expects these units to last.
Our Verdict
The ProForm FX 5 isn’t the best choice for an elliptical trainer at this price
but if you must have one it will probably hold up for a couple of years until
you can step up in class. We do like the programs; especially the Personal
Trainer that automatically adjusts the resistance level to focus on weight loss
and aerobic periods. The ProForm FX5 elliptical trainer, at $499, offers fair
value but should do the job for a lightweight user.
